On October 7, 1998, Shihan John James suffered a
tragedy that would change his life. On that day, his longtime
teacher, Professor Nick Cerio, passed away very unexpectedly leaving
a void that Shihan James thought would never by filled.
In 1999 & 2001, Shihan James attended the
Gathering of Eagles weekends in Las Vegas. The purpose of
these trips was to learn from other Kenpo/Kempo Seniors about life
after the passing of a Style's leader. During the trips, there
was one individual who was a shining beacon in the fog that
surrounded Shihan James' Martial Arts future. The man moved
with a grace that defied the devastating power that he could inflict
at will. Master Bill Chun, Jr. ,from a distance, looked like
the epitome of a Martial Arts Master with impeccable basics and
perfect execution of his techniques against any attack. So
much so that he made it look easy. Up close, Master Bill Chun,
Jr. was a warm and courteous person who never makes anyone feel
judged or inferior. Shortly after the 2001 Gathering, Shihan
James invited Master Chun, Jr. to do a seminar in his home state of
Massachusetts. The seminars were heavily attended and were
Shihan James' true beginning in learning the concepts of Master Bill
Chun, Jr.'s Art. Over the ensuing years, Master Chun, Jr. put
Shihan James through a long series of tests to challenge his
dedication and loyalty to his new teachings. After what seemed
like an eternity, Master Chun, Jr. formally accepted Shihan James as
a student of the Go Shin Jitsu Kai/Chinese Kempo tradition.
Thus completing the circle started by Professor Nick Cerio, who
trained with both Grandmaster Bill Chun, Sr. and Professor William
K.S. Chow decades ago (see Unity Picture™
to the right).
For the privilege of being accepted as a student
and of being given a new Martial Arts 'home' to live in, Shihan
James continues to show his gratitude to Master Chun, Jr. by being a
devoted and loyal student and by assisting Master Chun, Jr. in
various endeavors when asked to do so. It was in this manner,
that Shihan James accepted the position offered by Master Bill Chun,
Jr. of being a Contact for the Go Shin Jitsu Kai/Chinese Kempo
Federation website.
